차세대 레이어링 테크놀러지(layering technology) 기업 유림특수화학㈜이 에코바디스(EcoVadis) 지속가능성 평가에서 상위 16% 결과로 브론즈 등급을 획득했다.

에코바디스는 2007년 프랑스에 설립된 대표적 글로벌 지속가능성 평가기관이다. 전 세계적으로 지속가능경영을 중요한 비즈니스 지표를 활용하는 만큼 글로벌 기업들도 에코바디스 평가를 표준으로 삼아 거래업체들이 평가 받도록 요청하고 있다. 에코바디스는 글로벌 ESG 평가기관으로 GRI, UNGC, ISO 26000 등의 국제표준을 기반으로 ▲환경 ▲노동‧인권 ▲윤리 ▲지속가능한 조달 4개부문을 평가한다. 180개국 약 13만여개의 기업이 참여하고 있으며 평가등급은 플래티넘(상위 1% 내), 골드(상위 5% 내), 실버(상위 15% 내) 브론즈(상위 35% 내)로 구분된다.

2024년 평가등급은 기존 플래티넘 (상위 1% 내), 골드(상위 5% 내), 실버(상위 25% 내) 브론즈(상위 50% 내)에서 대폭 상향 조정되었다. 에코바디스(EcoVadis)가 ESG 경영환경 속에서 중요한 투자지표로 사용되고 있는 만큼 평가 기준이 세분화, 상향 조정되고 있는 상황이다. 이러한 이유로 아직 국내에서는 전담 ESG 조직이 있거나 ESG를 실천한다고 자부하는 중견, 대기업 중심으로 평가에 참여하고 있는 현실이다. 

국내 페인트 업계에서 가장 선도적으로 에코바디스(EcoVadis) 등급을 획득한 유림특수화학은 이번 에코바디스 360도 제3자 평가를 통해 유림의 기술, 안전, 노동, 조달, 시스템 등 전사적 경영 차원의 일관성, 실제적인 ESG 모니터링 기반을 확인 받았다. 이번 객관평가를 통해 세계수준의 ESG 정책 관점을 이해하여 결국 시대가 요구하는 기술의 가치에 한 발 앞서 나갈 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 

시대가 요구하는 기술과 다양한 고객의 요구사항을 모두 충족해야 하는 어려움을 안고 있는 정밀화학 산업의 특성 상, 아직까지는 외부에서 요구 받을 때까지 제3자 평가를 유보하거나 상대적으로 까다롭지 않은 국내 ESG 기관 감사, 자체 집계 ESG 공시보고서 혹은 CSR 활동 위주로 공시하는 것이 대부분이었다. 하지만 실제적인 ESG 경영활동을 강조해왔던 유림은 시대적 요구사항에 객관적으로 평가를 받아볼 수 있는 도전적인 기회로 받아들이고 선제적으로 에코바디스(EcoVadis) 평가를 받았다. 전사적인 노력으로 기존 각 사업부 단위, 혹은 특정 매뉴얼 단위에서 평가되고 관리되었던 ESG 목표치를 유림 ESG 위원회가 정책서로 제작하고 단일 관리 환경을 구축한 성과도 얻었다.

Yoolim Specialty Chemical Co. Ltd. a leader in next-generation layering technology has earned a Bronze medal in the EcoVadis sustainability assessment placing it within the top 16 percent of evaluated companies.

Established in France in 2007 EcoVadis is a premier global sustainability rating agency. As sustainable management becomes a critical business metric worldwide global corporations are increasingly adopting EcoVadis as a standard and requiring their partners to undergo evaluation. As a global ESG rating agency EcoVadis assesses four key areas which are Environment, Labor and Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement based on international standards such as GRI, UNGC and ISO 26000. Currently approximately 130,000 companies across 180 countries participate in this program with ratings categorized into Platinum for the top 1 percent, Gold for the top 5 percent, Silver for the top 15 percent and Bronze for the top 35 percent.

In 2024 the grading standards were significantly tightened compared to the previous year. As EcoVadis becomes an essential investment indicator in the ESG management landscape evaluation criteria are becoming more granular and stringent. Consequently in South Korea participation is primarily led by major corporations and mid-sized enterprises with dedicated ESG organizations or robust sustainability initiatives.

Yoolim Specialty Chemical the first in the domestic paint industry to obtain an EcoVadis rating has validated its enterprise-wide consistency across technology, safety, labor, procurement and systems. This EcoVadis 360-degree third-party assessment has confirmed the company’s solid foundation for practical ESG monitoring. Through this objective evaluation Yoolim has gained a deeper understanding of world-class ESG policies positioning the company to advance the value of its technology in line with contemporary demands.

Due to the complex nature of the fine chemical industry which must balance evolving technological needs with diverse customer requirements many companies have historically deferred third-party assessments until externally required. Most have focused on domestic audits, internal ESG reports or CSR activities. However Yoolim has proactively embraced this assessment as a strategic opportunity to objectively validate its ESG commitments. Through collective effort the Yoolim ESG Committee successfully consolidated ESG targets into a unified policy and management system.
