브랜드의 뿌리에서 찾은 미래 모빌리티의 비전

포니의 시간은 현대차가 과거 유산을 되새기는 헤리티지 프로젝트의 일환으로, 지난 5월 이탈리아에서 개최한 '현대 리유니온' 이후 두 번째이자 국내에서의 첫 이벤트다. '헤리티지'란 목적이 뚜렷한 만큼 대한민국 첫 독자 개발 차로 꼽히는 포니가 쌓아 올린 시간의 흔적을 따라갈 수 있었다. 

이곳에선 포니가 활약한 1970~80년대 국내 분위기로 구성했다. 당시 막 아스팔트가 굳은 경부고속도로를 누비기 위해 탄생한 차가 포니였으니 자연스러운 설정이다. 사회상을 엿볼 수 있는 영화 포스터들과 잡지, 물가를 비교해 볼 수 있는 디스플레이도 눈길을 끌었다. 무엇보다도 가장 주목을 끌은 건 실제 포니였다. 전시회에서 제일 먼저 만나는 포니는 최신형인 포니2로, 캐나다 수출 품목을 적용한 CX 트림이다. 미래의 방향을 제시하기 위해 복원된 포니인 만큼 레트로한 분위기와는 달리 외장 바디 상도에는 전기자동차 시대에 맞는 차세대 저온경화 클리어로 개발된 유림의 일레카 제품이 적용되었다. '시대에 맞는 솔루션'을 표방하는 유림 표면기술의 상징이기도 하다. 고객의 브랜드 비전을 위해한 발 앞서 연구되고 있는 유림의 다양한 환경성 개선 기술이 기대되는 바이다.

이번 전시는 현대차의 단순한 추억팔이가 아닌 국민들과 포니가 함께한 여정, 그리고 정주영 선대회장에서 시작한 '인류를 위한 진보(Progress for Humanity)'에 대한 짧은 이야기가 담겨져 있었다. 하나의 자동차로 풀어낼 수 있는 이야기와 영향력이 얼마나 길고 강할 수 있는지 보여주는 사건이기도 했다. 첫 콘셉트카가 등장한 지 49년 만에 포니의 전성기가 이제 막 시작한 것 같은 느낌이 드는 이유다.

Pony's Time is part of Hyundai Motor's heritage project to reflect on its past legacy, marking the second event following the 'Hyundai Reunion' held in Italy last May, and the first of its kind in Korea. As the purpose of 'heritage' is clear, visitors could follow the traces of time built up by the Pony, which is considered South Korea's first independently developed car.

This place was configured with the domestic atmosphere of the 1970s and 1980s when the Pony was active. Since the Pony was a car born to roam the Gyeongbu Expressway, where the asphalt had just hardened at the time, it is a natural setting. Movie posters and magazines that offer a glimpse into the social aspects of that era, as well as a display comparing prices, also drew attention. Above all, the most eye-catching element was the actual Pony. The very first Pony encountered at the exhibition is the Pony 2, the latest model, which is the CX trim applied with Canadian export specifications. As it is a Pony restored to present a future direction, unlike the retro atmosphere, YOOLIM's ELeca product, developed as a next-generation low-temperature curing clear coat suitable for the electric vehicle era, was applied to the exterior body topcoat. It is also a symbol of YOOLIM Surface Technology, which advocates 'solutions suitable for the times.' Expectations are high for YOOLIM's various environmental improvement technologies, which are being researched one step ahead for the customer's brand vision.

This exhibition was not just a simple selling of memories by Hyundai Motor, but contained a journey that citizens shared with the Pony, as well as a short story about 'Progress for Humanity' that began with the late founder Ju-yung Chung. It was also an event that showed how long and powerful the story and influence that can be unfolded through a single automobile can be. This is why it feels as if the heyday of the Pony has just begun, 49 years after the first concept car appeared.
